"Chindogu" translates to "useless invention" in Japanese. In this depiction, rain cascades onto the book cover as I drink from it, symbolically absorbing knowledge from each droplet.
This is a portrait of my friend who is half white and half asian. I attempt to visualize the push and pull from both cultures through the fabric - the belt around her kimino tightening and transforming into a snake, and the cranes on the fabric coming alive and flying away.
The birds on top of the ink bottles are staring triumphantly at the pig - further depicting the power of writing and arts in conquering the oppressor.
